Setting boundaries – not a wall, but an invitation

Sometimes you feel it right away. Something’s off. Someone says something, touches you, makes a joke – and you get a knot in your stomach. You think, “I actually don’t want this.” But saying what you think? That’s often easier said than done.

Setting boundaries can feel daunting. Because you don’t want to come across as difficult, overly sensitive, or unfriendly. Yet it’s exactly that which creates clarity and respect. No matter how well your colleague, manager, or friend knows you – no one can read your mind. What feels completely normal to one person might feel too close, too personal, or just too much to another.

By expressing your boundaries, you’re not only helping yourself, but also the other person. You’re making clear what works for you – and what doesn’t. And it doesn’t have to be harsh or confrontational.
Boundaries aren’t walls you put up, but clear lines that help create healthy collaboration and connection.

For example:

  • “I feel uncomfortable with those comments – could you stop?”

  • “I’d like to leave it at this for now.”

  • “I have a different boundary here, and I’d like to express that.”

These are sentences that take a bit of practice, but they make a real difference. They don’t push people away – they create space for respectful interaction.

And it works both ways.
Someone who knows and expresses their own boundaries learns to better respect the boundaries of others. True assertiveness isn’t just: “I say whatever I want.”
It’s: “I express what I need and I listen when you do the same.”

At Report App, we believe that setting boundaries starts with awareness, openness, and support. By sharing knowledge about personal boundaries and the grey area, we foster more understanding – and with that understanding, connection grows.

Because in the end, it’s not about winning or being right.
It’s about making sure everyone feels safe, seen, and able to be themselves.
And that starts with the courage to say: this is where my boundary is.
